Synthetic feathers?
21st-Jul-2006 05:00 pm
Is there such a thing as a truly synthetic feather? I googled around a bit, but I don't have much time and thought someone here might have some answers for me!

I'm going to be a bridesmaid in my sister's wedding next year, and it's going to have a slight "Italian Renaissance masquerade" theme - we will all be wearing masquerade-style masks, though the ceremony and clothing will be modern.

For the bridesmaids' hair, my sister would like for us to wear those feather-combs that are often worn to horse races (hair combs with beads and elaborate feather designs) to continue with the masquerade-ish theme. She told me that they were probably synthetic feathers, but I'm not sure about that since I don't believe there are any truly fake feathers.

If the feathers are real then I won't wear them, and she's pretty understanding about my beliefs (she knows I'll be doing my own makeup, for instance, and she didn't have an issue with not using silk for the bridesmaids dresses). I'm still not sure how I would feel about wearing synthetic feathers, but I would like to know if that's an option.

Any alternative ideas for hairstyles would be helpful too!

You know, I've wondered the same question before. I thought how weird it would be for there to be fake feathers, and always wondered how realistic they could make them.

I have seen synthetic "feathers" like the trim on this nighty:

But that really isn't the same kind of feather I'm looking for!

Then I found this tonight (too bad it's already ended):

The fuzzy bit could easily be synthetic, but those longer white feathers look very real! If they are truly fake, then maybe a lot of the "feathers" I've seen on accessories are fake also... and now I'm inspired to check out eBay. :P

Googling for synthetic+feather brought up quite a few results, including products such as synthetic feather boas; clearly, they can be made, but your best bet is to contact the company she's considering buying from to check.

Thank you! I had googled a different word combination earlier and most of the results were for synthetic feather bedding (I'm not sure what those "synthetic feathers" would look like... they probably just feel like feathers).

I did have black and maroon angel wings made of synthetic feathers - they seemed as close to the real thing as damnit, though the spines of the feathers were clearly plastic when you got close. Still, very cute, and I did get to pass them along to a lovely goth boy who'd appreciate them when I moved, so that was good.

They sound gorgeous!

I do have a pair of angel wings that I bought years ago made with cardboard and bright blue feathers... I always assumed they were real feathers, but if I ever find them I'll have to look more closely!

I wound up googling "fake feathers" and "artificial feathers" and found some more links... they can look quite believable, which makes me wonder how many of the "feathers" I see around are actually real. Even if I can't find a fake feather comb/fascinator to buy, I can just make one.

you two and your ease of amusement

haha... simple things amuse simple minds?

Some how I don't think that statement is accurate! Not for vgnwtch anyway... I can't vouch for my own complexity, especially not at 4:58am. ;P

Oh, it doesn't take much to keep me chortling - just has to be the right thing :)
