Is Fish Oil Just Snake Oil?

Santa Knows!

This was a good article to wake up to; I've suspected it for years, even as doctors recommend I eat fish and take fish oil supplements.

Have people here found doctors who think you're doing the right thing, nutrition-wise? A lot of people are surprised that at my age I don't eat dairy and am not keeling over from osteoporosis. I may still, but I often wish I could do more than preach to the choir.

Oh and look! Another! Is Fish Oil the New Snake Oil?

From the "Well" blog in the New York Times: Fish Oil Claims Not Supported by Research

Over the years, people have criticized my sources, saying they're not mainstream enough. But Forbes! The New York Times!

Most doctors only have to take one semester of nutrition to get their degree, so I don't tend to take what they tell me very seriously. I may not have a degree in nutrition, but I certainly read a lot more about it than the average doctor. Or at least the one's that would recommend fish.

Yeah; my point wasn't even about that, because I think it's common knowledge—at least among vegans—that doctors know very little about nutrition.

I don't know if you looked at the links, but one points out that the fish oil available in capsule form is bleached and denatured beyond recognition anyway—certainly not what Nanook of the North was eating.

Oh, no, yeah, I definitely found that stuff interesting and it's handy to have links like that around to stop the incessant noise of people singing the praises of that stuff.

I specifically "shopped" for a doctor that is nutritionally educated and "vegan-friendly". Was lucky to get a good recommendation, so i am pretty satisfied with her for the most part.
